Stay Safe, Warm and Positive During a Winter Storm

Our Service Area

Winter storms are rare in Central Texas, but when they arrive, they can be disruptive—especially for older adults and families who depend on routine. Whether you are staying home with the support of a Divine Home Care Services caregiver or managing on your own for a few days, preparation and mindset make all the difference. These cold days can be uncomfortable, but they can also be an opportunity to slow down, stay safe, and even enjoy some simple comforts at home.

Staying Warm and Safe

Keeping your home warm is the first priority. Close curtains and blinds at night to keep heat from escaping through windows. If you have drafty doors or windows, roll up towels or blankets and place them along the bottom to block cold air. Dress in layers—thermal shirts, sweaters, socks, and slippers help trap body heat better than one heavy garment alone. A knit hat indoors can make a surprising difference.

If you use space heaters, place them at least three feet away from curtains, furniture, and bedding. Never leave them unattended while sleeping. Make sure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working, especially if you are using gas appliances or fireplaces more often than usual.

For those with caregivers, your caregiver can help check room temperatures, assist with safe heater placement, and prepare warm drinks or soups throughout the day. If you are on your own, keep a phone nearby and charged in case you need help or need to check in with family or neighbors.

Eating and Hydrating for Warmth

Cold weather can reduce thirst, but hydration is still important. Warm beverages such as tea, coffee, or broth help maintain body temperature and encourage fluid intake. Simple hot meals—oatmeal, soup, beans, or rice dishes—are easy to prepare and provide lasting warmth and energy.

If grocery trips are delayed, focus on shelf-stable foods and frozen meals. Caregivers can help organize meals and ensure clients are eating regularly. Those without caregivers should plan meals ahead and keep snacks within easy reach to avoid unnecessary movement on slippery floors.

Staying Entertained and Mentally Active

Being stranded at home does not have to mean boredom. This is a perfect time for activities that keep the mind engaged and the spirit lifted. Reading, listening to music, or watching favorite movies can be comforting. Puzzle books, crosswords, or simple card games help keep the brain active.

If you have a caregiver, ask them to help set up music, choose a movie, or even start a small project like organizing photos or reminiscing through old albums. For those alone, phone calls or video chats with family and friends can ease isolation and bring warmth that no heater can provide.

Creative hobbies also shine during storm days. Knitting, journaling, drawing, or even baking can turn an unexpected stay-at-home period into a productive and pleasant experience.

Making the Best of Being Home

Storm days invite us to rest and reset. Take short walks inside your home to keep circulation moving. Stretch gently in a chair or bed. Open curtains during the day to let in natural light and lift your mood. Keep a regular sleep schedule and avoid staying in bed all day unless medically necessary.

At Divine Home Care Services, we understand that winter storms can be stressful, especially for seniors and families. Our caregivers are trained to help clients stay safe, warm, and emotionally supported during these challenging days. Whether you are weathering the storm with a caregiver or on your own, remember: staying calm, prepared, and connected is the best way to get through it.

Cold weather will pass, but comfort, care, and a positive routine can carry you through safely until the sun comes back out.
